Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon Frank Tumwebaze has appointed Dr Yona Baguma as the new Director General of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).

Baguma, who has been the NARO Deputy DG, replaces Dr Ambrose Agona, who is retiring this week.

“Glad to announce to the agricultural research community, and all stakeholders of (Ministry of Agriculture), that in accordance with the NARO law, I have appointed Dr Yona Baguma as new DG (NARO) to replace Dr Ambrose Agona who retires on 21st April 2023.” Tumwebaze announced on Thursday.

“I wish to thank Dr Ambrose Agona for his efforts in leading our agricultural research agenda. NARO continues to develop highly resilient seed varieties that sustain our production. I thank the council of NARO for conducting a transparent recruitment process.”

The outgoing DG, Agona has held the position since 2015, when he replaced the late Dr Emily Kabushenga Twinamasiko.

NARO is a government agency under the Agriculture Ministry which oversees all aspects of public-funded agricultural research in Uganda.

It is mandated to undertake research in all aspects of agriculture including crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry, agro-machinery, natural resources and socio-economics.
