More than 6 billion people around the world had the opportunity to see Uganda through the Ghetto Kids at the half time show of the World Cup final on July 19th.
On one of the biggest stages on Earth, these children carried our flag, our culture, our energy, and our story before a global audience that few Ugandans will ever have the chance to reach.
For a few unforgettable moments, Uganda wasn’t making headlines because of conflict or crisis. Uganda was being celebrated through the talent, resilience, and joy of its own children.
That is no small achievement.
Many organizations, governments, and countries spend millions trying to earn the kind of global visibility that these children helped create through their talent alone. So imagine what it would mean for them to receive a simple message from home; “Congratulations. Uganda is proud of you.”
Those words cost nothing, yet to a child, they can mean everything.
Recognition builds confidence. Appreciation creates belonging. Encouragement inspires the next generation to believe that their dreams matter. This isn’t just about the Ghetto Kids. It’s about the kind of country we want to become.
A country that celebrates its people while they are making history—not only when they are remembered years later.
If we want more young Ugandans to dream bigger, create more, and represent us on the world’s greatest stages, then we must also become a nation that celebrates them when they do. Because every great achievement deserves more than applause from the world.
It deserves appreciation from home.
After featuring in a couple of Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo’s music videos, their talent captured the attention of Moroccan-American rapper French Montana who got them on his “Unforgettable” song video which has since amassed over a billion views online.
This massive recognition opened yet more doors, leading Ghetto Kids to the final of Britain’s Got Talent in 2023, before also competing in America’s Got Talent the following year.
While this year’s football World Cup final may have been the Ghetto Kids’ biggest stage yet, it is definitely not their first major sporting event.
Back in 2023, the troupe performed at a football half-time match in France between rivals Paris Saint-Germain and Reims.
All these accomplishments are not just a win for the dancing kids but for their motherland Uganda and I wish the country would recognize and acknowledge their contributions more.
