Health Minister launches rehabilitation programme to support people with disabilities

The Minister of Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero has  launched a rehabilitation programme to support people with disability to access rehabilitation and assistive technology services across the country.

While flagging the dispatch of the equipment in Lira City on Saturday, Dr Aceng said the Communities should be empowered to seek health services as she appreciated USAID
Learning and building for assisted rehabilitation (ReLAB-HS) for supporting the Ministry of Health to acquire the devices.

“At the end of the day we must all be participants in attaining good health and wellness. People must know what is good and bad to embrace services. We want to achieve Universal Health Coverage,” Dr Aceng added.

Dr Aceng asked the technical teams to ensure the mobility devices go to the genuine beneficiaries in the communities.

Director Public Health at the Ministry, Dr Daniel Kyabanyinze, indicated that the department of Community of Department has revived the rehabilitation and assisted technology Strategic plan to boost access to rehabilitative services.

The LIRA District Health Officer, Dr Ocen Patrick Buchan, appreciated USAID ReLAB for its partnership and support towards the development of rehabilitation and assisted technology services in the country, most especially in Lira City.

“To decongest Lira Regional Referral Hospital, we mapped out service delivery points at health facilities outside the hospital and this involved training and building capacity for health workers to extend rehabilitation services to people with disabilities,” Dr Buchan said, adding that 142 million worth rehabilitative and assisted technology equipment have been acquired to ensure people with disabilities get rehabilitative services . The assisted technology equipment include walking clutches

Country Director USAID ReLAB-HS, Mr Sam Tukei Ojulo said: “We know that you are champion of rehabilitation in the country. The goal of ReLAB-HS in the goal the need for rehabilitative services. There is a growing need and interest with rehabilitation and this is the process of developing as system.”

Rebecca, Deputy Mayor Lira City welcomed the guests the launch of assisted technology. Thanked Relab-HS for working with the Ministry of Health for supporting mobility. We are cherishing the process of inclusing not only supporting the disabled people. We appreciate the Ministry and ReLab, a USAID supported project that is supporting the disabled with mobility appliances.
