Airtel Uganda under their Airtel Cares Program has donated an assortment of items to Masulita Children’s Home, one of the facilities operated by the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO).

The items including food, scholastic materials, personal effects items , and a chain link for fencing the facility ( all  worth about Shs 55 million) were handed over to Olive Birungi Lumonya, the UWESO National Executive Committee Chairwoman.

Commissioned in 1989, Masulita Children’s Home, is a reception Centre for Children who are homeless and have been living on Kampala’s streets.

Speaking at the event, Ms Birungi thanked the telecom for extending this support and called upon other private companies and organizations to follow this example.

She further explained that the high influx in children on the streets is partly due to the ever rising cases of domestic violence.

“When gender based violence increases in homes, you realize that even the street kids will also increase,” she said.

“That is why we are saying that if we can strengthen the families and stop the fighting and give them economic empowerment, we shall have less kids on the streets.”

On his part, Airtel Uganda Managing Director Manoj murali said the company was pleased to lend a hand in helping the vulnerable children.

“When we learnt about the important work that Masulita Children’s Home was doing to provide a safe and nurturing environment, we knew that we had to get involved. We were inspired by their dedication to helping these children have a better life, and we wanted to be part of this great initiative,” he said.

“At Airtel, we believe that children are the future leaders and we look at them as the next generation, and it is key that we identify collaborative opportunities with partners like Masulita Children’s Home where we provide an opportunity for us to harness their potential and set their path for success,” murali concluded.
