Emmanuel Omoding, the son of the former Serere County Member of Parliament, the late Patrick Okabe has been voted to replace his father in Parliament.

In a hotly contested vote, Omoding defeated four other candidates who included; Alice Alaso of the Alliance for National Transmission (ANT), Emmanuel Eratu of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Philip Oucor of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), and Martin Onguruco (independent, but NRM leaning).

Omoding was declared winner of the vote by Serere District Returning Officer, Sylvia Nangendo Cheptegei on Thursday night.

“As Returning Officer for Serere Electoral District and in accordance with Section 58(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, I declare Omoding Emmanuel who has obtained the largest number of votes to be the elected candidate for Serere County Constituency, Serere Electoral District,” said Mrs Cheptegei as she declared Omoding winner of the vote.

Omoding, garnered 15,638 votes against his closet challenge, Oucor of the NRM who garnered 13,206 votes.

Alaso came third with 3,335 votes, followed by Martin Onguruco with 2,523 votes, while FDC’s Emmanuel Eratu came fifth with 1,252.

The Serere County Parliamentary by-election registered a low voter turnout.

Out of the 74,394 registered voters in Serere County Constituency, only 35,954 came out to cast their ballots.

Out of the 35,954 votes, 812 were rejected (invalid) while 170 were spoilt .
