The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) in partnership with the Embassy of the Peoples’ Republic of China in Kampala is organizing the inaugural Uganda-China Tourism and Cultural Symposium scheduled for January 21.

Themed “Bridging Cultures, Enhancing Cooperation: Unlocking Uganda-China Tourism Potential,” the symposium is aimed at strengthening cultural exchange and tourism cooperation between Uganda and China, promoting mutual understanding, and exploring opportunities for sustainable tourism development.

Among the key objectives of this partnership is to bring together stakeholders from both countries to share experiences, expertise, and best practices in tourism and cultural heritage management.

According to a concept communique from the Ministry, Ugandan tourism stakeholders are particularly looking to benchmark on China’s best practices as regards domestic tourism considering the latter is a well-developed and promoted domestic tourism market having so far recorded 1.5 billion domestic trips.

This, therefore, provides a clear backdrop for the China-Uganda cooperation in development and promotion of Tourism; with the potential for not just a strong market base for Uganda’s tourism but also a platform for Uganda to benchmark on in a bid to embrace and strengthen the domestic tourism base.

It should also be noted that China is Uganda’s second largest tourism market in the whole of Asia after India and a latest analysis done by FastData indicate that the Chinese outbound travel market is now more fragmented and diverse, with travelers seeking out new experiences, cultural exploration, personalized and independent trips.

“The Uganda-China Tourism and Cultural Symposium will avail a platform for exploring opportunities for joint tourism ventures, marketing, and promotion. Fostering partnerships, and business relationships between Ugandan and Chinese stakeholders is also an expected outcome,” the communique reads in part.

During the symposium, industry experts will also discuss strategies for responsible tourism practices, community-based tourism, and environmental conservation.

The event will also feature a cultural exchange session showcasing Uganda’s rich cultural heritage and China’s ancient civilization, highlighting similarities and differences, for further tourism product development.

A couple of other events have brought the Uganda-China tourism audiences together, the previous being the dragon boat festival held in on June 9th, 2024 celebrated by the Chinese community in Uganda, joined by a delegation from the Ministry of Tourism.

Speaking about the festival, the Minister of State for Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka noted that embracing and celebrating diverse cultures serves as a catalyst for enduring collaborations between nations, promoting peace and understanding, as well as enhancing the economic benefits of tour and travel.

“The Uganda-China Tourism and Cultural Symposium which is in the pipeline will foster more tourism investment and tours by the Chinese community in Uganda as well as ignite interest for Destination Uganda back home in China,” Hon. Mugarra said.

According to the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong, the dragon boat festival which was attended by locals in Katabi – Entebbe, graced by various delegations from government MDAs was a precursor to this grand Uganda-China Tourism and Cultural Symposium.
