Telling Uganda’s authentic story has never been more imperative and now is the time to steer away from the colonial narrative of what Uganda is, Hon. Martin Mugarra, the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities said on Monday during the unveiling of the upcoming series dubbed “Superheroes of Uganda.”

Unveiled by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities through its Department of Museums and Monuments, in collaboration with Travel Tube- a platform committed to showcasing Africa’s diverse culture and history, the Superheroes of Uganda series celebrates and showcases Uganda’s rich heritage through a captivating collection of both books and animated movies.

The animated movies will be available for streaming on TravelTube, with a launch set for October 6th and the series premiere scheduled for the 9th of October in honor of Uganda National Day.

The multimedia initiative that combines the power of storytelling, animation cultural preservation seeks to empower Ugandans by giving a voice to their unique stories, cultural nuances, and historical narratives, while also fostering a sense of national pride and inspiring audiences to embrace their own inner superhero.

“The animation industry has a huge viewership across the world so this initiative will take our story. Being a multimedia project, this will cater to a larger audience. Colonialists have told interesting stories about Uganda and Africa, many of which are not necessarily true. Now is the right time to tell our actual, authentic Ugandan story, not the colonial narrative that has been spread over the years,” Minister Mugarra said.

TravelTube CEO Elijah Watendo (2nd L) with Minister Mugarra (3rd L) and other officials at the event.

Speaking at the event, the Ag. Commissioner for Uganda Museums and Monuments said Uganda is endowed with natural and cultural heritage as well as numerous unsung heroes who have contributed to the history of the country and deserve to be recognized.

“We have been in talks with TravelTube; documenting some of the iconic heroes whose deeds are chronicled by the museum, and among these are the barefoot footballers who won the British Olympic game 2:1 with no shoes. The other key hero story is that of Ndahura the gorilla, whose artifact was mounted in the museum in February. This goes to show that we deal with natural and cultural heritage within the museum,” Nyiracyiza said.

She added, “The ‘Superheroes of Uganda’ series is a testament to the power of storytelling and cultural preservation and promotion. By partnering with Travel Tube, we are excited to bring these captivating tales to a global audience, fostering cross-cultural appreciation and understanding.”

The other stories in the series include but not limited to; The Return of Princess Nakayima, Kibuuka – God of War, and Ndahura the Silverback.

As part of the launch festivities, attendees will be treated to a first-hand experience of the exhibition, followed by a series of engaging discussions and presentations that shed light on the project’s significance and objectives.

According to TravelTube CEO Elijah Watendo, there are millions of people around the world “who look like us and would be inspired by these stories.”

TravelTube will also be launching a mobile application that will give users automatic notifications about nearby monuments, museums, and other historic sites as they go about their business. The notifications will bear information on the particular nearby site.

Watendo is optimistic this will interest Ugandans in the various pieces of rich history spread across their areas of operation and encourage them to tell their unique stories.

Minister Mugarra said marketing destination Uganda has to adopt more strategies, among which is exploiting the digital avenues that will take the Ugandan story to the world.
