The journey to Griffin Falls starts somewhere on the dusty, unmarked tracks that wind through the vast sugarcane plantations outside Lugazi Town. As you leave the main Kampala-Jinja highway, the world seems to narrow into a green corridor, with sugarcane stalks towering on either side – the road ahead a winding mystery.
This is the first lesson the forest teaches: the best adventures often lie down the path less signposted.
Stepping into Mabira Forest is like permeating a membrane into another world. The air, once thick with dust and industrial fumes, suddenly has a cool and moist feel, embodying the profound, earthy scent of life, and decay.
Established over a century ago in 1900, this 306-square-kilometer rainforest is one of Uganda’s vital green lungs and a sanctuary for an astonishing array of life.
The forest is a living library with over 300 tree species. You’ll learn of the strangler fig, a tree that begins life as a seedling in the high canopy and sends roots downward, slowly enveloping and ultimately suffocating its host in a dramatic, centuries-long embrace. The Entasesa tree (Prunus africana), whose bark is sought for traditional medicine.
The forest floor is a haven for birds and butterflies. With about 315 species of birds, including great blue turacos and hornbills. The forest is also home to three monkey species. Troops of red-tailed monkeys crash through the branches, and if you’re fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of the shyer, rarer grey-cheeked mangabey, a primate found in only a few forests in East Africa.
Canopy Zip-Line Adventure
Mabira Forest is a 360 range of adventure, discovery, relaxation and fun, all sprinkled with nature’s greatest gift to man, the greenery. A canopy zipline is every thrill seeker’s holy grail!
Guided by experienced ‘Sky Captains’, the adventure begins with being safely belayed up the first ancient tree, then you embark on a thrilling sequence of five zip-lines that stretch 250 meters in total, with one exhilarating final line running 78 meters diagonally.
For many, this adrenaline rush activity is a signature experience at Griffin Falls Camp. It’s the first and only zip-line of its kind in Uganda, which sends you soaring up to 40 meters high through the treetops, offering a monkey’s-eye view of the forest.
The Trail to the Falls
The hike to Griffin Falls itself is a moderate, hour-long walk that feels like a journey deeper into time. While the zip-lining provides a thrilling, aerial perspective, the hike to the falls grounds you in the intimate, ancient beauty of the rainforest.
The trail can sometimes be rugged, with fallen trees to navigate. It gives way suddenly to a striking landscape of bare granite rocks, and the sound of water grows from a whisper to a steady roar. It’s a perfect opportunity for photography and quiet observation before you even reach the main attraction as you slope.
The falls cascade through a narrow, rocky canyon in a series of steps. They may not be the tallest or most powerful in Uganda, but their beauty is in their setting. It’s a perfect place to pause and absorb the forest’s tranquility.
Amidst this wuthering beauty though, multiple visitors over the years have reported a persistent, unpleasant odor from the river and sometimes a brownish colour of the water, attributed to wastewater from the upstream sugar cane processing plant. This is a sobering reminder of the environmental challenges facing even the protected areas.
Community and Conservation
What makes a visit to Griffin Falls Camp truly meaningful is understanding its purpose. The camp is run by the Mabira Forest Integrated Community Organisation (MAFICO), a community-based project. Every entrance fee, guide hire, or zip-line ticket directly supports sustainable development in the surrounding villages, funding tree planting, education, and health projects.
Your visit is an active part of conserving this forest, providing locals with an economic alternative to logging or encroachment.
Getting There
Griffin Falls is 10km away from Lugazi town, off the Kampala-Jinja highway. However, the turn-off is not well-marked; therefore, the most reliable way is to take a boda-boda from Lugazi town to guide you in.

As you exit Mabira Forest, the hum of Kampala-Jinja highway traffic slowly replaces the forest’s chorus. But you carry back more than just photographs.
