To bolster Uganda’s renewable energy sector, key stakeholders convened at the “Renewable Energy Business Accelerator Dialogue” with the aim of addressing critical issues concerning Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within the renewable energy industry.

This initiative, organized by Belli Advisory and backed by GIZ Energizing Development (EnDev) Uganda, provided participating companies with training and guidance in various essential areas, including Strategic Planning, Investment Readiness, Marketing, Operations, Human Resource Management, and Financial Management.

Themed “Empowering SMEs for Sustainable Growth,” the event highlighted the significant role played by SMEs in propelling economic development, fostering innovation, and generating wealth in Uganda, as emphasized in the 2022 Uganda Investment Authority report. With over 2.5 million Ugandans employed in this sector, constituting 90% of private sector development, their pivotal role cannot be overstated. The service sector, which encompasses energy SMEs, comprises 49% of the total SMEs in Uganda, contributing at least 44% to the nation’s GDP.

Despite their substantial contributions, renewable energy SMEs face various performance-related challenges, primarily stemming from ineffective business governance and limited access to finance.

Jacob Etunganan, one of the facilitators at the event, stated, “Even as we discuss energy-efficient stoves, our ultimate goal is to completely eliminate the use of firewood and charcoal, which is why we want to support these SMEs producing energy-efficient technologies, expand their markets, and make their products more affordable.”

The World Bank’s 2020 report revealed that SMEs encounter difficulties in securing traditional bank financing due to factors like a lack of collateral and inadequate record-keeping. Even SMEs with the necessary documentation still face challenges in raising capital, with micro SMEs often considered high-risk and receiving lower priority. The Renewable Energy Business Accelerator Dialogue sought to address these pressing issues by emphasizing the role of business development support services in preparing renewable energy SMEs to attract investors.

The dialogue delved into the challenges faced by businesses in accessing financing, the concerns of financiers, and the potential of Business Development Services (BDS) in bridging these gaps. Moreover, the event explored innovative strategies for leveraging BDS to position these companies for long-term success.

Belli Advisory, the organization orchestrating this transformative dialogue, believes that growth, innovation, and sustainable development are the path forward for the SME landscape in Uganda.
